Being a Christian and Practicing Yoga

Yoga has started to become more and more popular within the past decade or so. As more and more people are getting into the practice of yoga, as they join the Yoga Burn weight loss program to get rid of the excess fat that is there in their bodies. 

First lets look at the history and idea of yoga practice. The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit “yuz” which means unite. The idea of yoga is uniting the mind, body and soul, making it one instead of three separate parts. The idea of the worship of gods is secondary. Which means the focus is switched to the divine and one can have a realization that there is something divine in this world. Practicing yoga can help one become more grounded in a specific religion no matter what it may be. The main idea of yoga is to take your focus away from things that could be distracting you and place them inward. Meaning it makes you pay attention to what is going on inside you. It unites your actions with your thoughts so you think about everything you are doing. And one of the main purposes is to unite you and your life with the divine. There are some that say one cannot be a Christian and still do yoga, or that if a Christian does yoga, then they are turning their back on God, which is the farthest thing from the truth. There are theories that with some of the ideas and meanings behind yoga and the poses that it is improper for Christians to take part in the practice which many see just as a fitness exercise. But Christians can do yoga and still honor God.

There are many benefits to doing yoga as well, not just uniting your mind, body, and soul. It helps give you poise, strength, and balance. Yoga helps your physical health and gives you a chance to clear your mind after a stressful day. As you stretch and move from pose to pose you open your muscles which allows more oxygen to them, making your body a lot healthier. Regular practice of yoga helps you learn how to listen to your body’s needs and limits. I can honestly say that doing just half an hour a day of yoga can make such a difference in how you feel and your energy levels. It increases your energy and helps make your limbs and entire body feel lighter, and ladies the numerous poses help get right of that little belly pouch and it helps curve your lower back to help with major back pains.

Now after knowing all of that yoga does not take away from one’s worship, praise, and faith in Jesus Christ. Yoga does not make one think of Buddhist or Hindu theories or ideals but can enhance one’s ideas of God and help them find a way of growing closer to him. For one aspect: the meditations which can lower blood pressure and heart rate; instead of saying the mantras, one can say little verse or small prayers to God like; Jesus loves me, or draw me closer to God. You can easily do the poses and postures without thinking about Hindi or Buddhist deities, but focus on God instead and your own walk with God. The idea of yoga isn’t necessarily focusing on a specific deity or religion, but one’s own religion and belief in a divine being.

Taking part in yoga for the fitness aspect of it does not make a person less of a Christian in any way. You can do yoga without even focusing your attention on any deity. As stated that is a secondary purpose, the main purpose is to put your focus on your body, mind, and soul instead of things that could be distracting. You learn the limits of your body and help increase those limits and make yourself healthier. I know I haven’t felt better since I started doing yoga after being diagnosed with cancer. I have more energy and I don’t feel the fatigue as much as I did when I wasn’t doing it.

No matter what you are doing you can focus your attention on God and make any practice into a way of drawing closer to God, and yoga is no different. Just because you do yoga you are no less of a Christian. It helps you be the best that you can be by allowing yourself to learn what your body needs as far as fitness and helps you see different ways of getting closer to God and gives you more chances in a day to say small prayers during the meditations. Who says prayers need to belong and drawn out instead a simple phrase said over and over again like “I need you.” Doing yoga and one’s personal beliefs are a private thing and are a personal in-depth thing. To simple say is they do yoga they cannot be a true Christian is wrong. Yoga is many things to many people as is their faith in Jesus Christ. To try and speculate what one feels or does during their yoga practice is hearsay and generally misplaced.

More and more people are getting into the practice of yoga, which is a great thing as more and more people are working out and looking to living a healthier life. Yoga can help someone find a deeper faith, find faith, or just increase their physical and internal strengths. You can easily do yoga and still be a Christian. Being a Christian and doing yoga as an exercise are two different things. There are ways to take different aspects and turn them into ways to become closer to God.
